What is the difference between an Air Curtain and an Air Wall/Air Door?

Air curtains and air walls both use airflow to reduce air exchange through open doors, entrances, or transitions, but they are not the same technology.

Air curtains are typically used at entrances, doors, and smaller openings to improve comfort, temper entrance areas, and limit air exchange.

Air walls/Air Doors are designed for more controlled and technical air-zone separation, such as separating warm and cold air, clean and contaminated air, odours, dust, insects, or process air.

The main difference is not just airflow speed at the unit, but how much usable velocity, direction, momentum, and flow energy remain at the critical point of the opening.

Fluid dynamics are central: pressure, nozzle geometry, discharge direction, turbulence, and momentum determine whether the air barrier remains effective across the opening.

A stable air wall/Air Door relies on controlled pressure distribution, a plenum chamber, and optimised nozzle geometry to create an even, directed air jet.

Energy savings come from reducing air exchange: if less warm air escapes or less warm outdoor air enters cooled areas, heating or cooling demand can be reduced.

An Air Wall/Air Door can be more efficient than a conventional air curtain because it aims to use a more targeted air jet with less unnecessary air volume.

Neither system replaces a closed door or provides security protection, and both have limits under strong wind, large temperature differences, or poor installation conditions.

Selection depends on the application: air curtains may suit simple or protected entrances, while air walls are better for demanding situations involving drafts, temperature losses, odours, dust, insects, or contamination.

In simple terms, if you need measurable results or have demanding circumstances then airwalls offer the best solution. If you have small openings with less demanding requirements then air curtains may suffice.
